Essential Oils and Your Brain

How do essential oils affect the brain?

Our sense of smell is linked to the limbic areas of the brain, which is the emotional control center. Emotional life is largely housed in the limbic system, and it has a great deal to do with the formation of memories. The limbic system also controls parts of our brain that regulate heart rate, breathing, stress levels, memory, blood pressure, and hormone balance.

When essential oils are inhaled, they travel to the brain. They can have a tremendous impact on both psychological and physiological effects on the limbic system.

Each essential oil has its own therapeutic calming and balancing properties. When we inhale an essential oil, its particles travel through the nasal passage to a receptor neuron that transports it to the limbic brain. Essential oils have the ability to pass the blood/brain barrier to help stabilize DNA and cellular memory. When inhaled through the nose, the essential oil stimulates tiny nerves that transmit a signal to the brain and begin to work on systems that regulate our body and our mind. This can have instant effects as inhaling through the nose is the quickest pathway to the brain.

Researchers found that sesquiterpenes, a natural compound found within the essential oils of patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood, cedarwood, and frankincense, help raise oxygen levels in the brain by 28%! An increase in oxygen within the brain can stimulate activity in the limbic system and hypothalamus, which can result in immediate effects on attitude, learning, emotions, and physical processes within the body such as hormone balance, immune function, and energy levels.

Essential oils are also being evaluated for treatment of brain injuries. When the brain sustains an injury, from a mild concussion to a serious head trauma, it takes a lot of time to heal. Frankincense oil can help speed up the process by supporting increased oxygenated blood traveling to the brain. When the brain absorbs more oxygen, it is able to retain and process information, function better and heal optimally.

Diffusing essential oils in a cold air diffuser may have these benefits:

  • Relax the body and mind, relieve tension
  • Help with weight management
  • Improve hormonal balance
  • Relieve headaches
  • Stimulate neurotransmitters
  • Improve concentration, mental clarity, and alertness
  • Stimulate secretion of endorphins

Pain Cream

One of the definitions of pain is a “distressing sensation in a particular part of the body.” And though essential oils can address mental and emotional pain, let’s talk a moment about physical pain. Pain is a message your body is sending you. And though it is critical, for chronic pain, that you address the root cause of that pain, in the short term, using essential oils can help your body feel relief.

As for acute pain (like growing pains or a soreness from a tough workout) essential oils can provide relief rather quickly. Oils get absorbed directly and quickly into the bloodstream and get right to work where they are needed.

This recipe makes for a great massage cream, as well. Just whip some coconut oil until soft and stir in your essential oils. It will keep for a long time in a cool, dark place.

Here is what I use, and I find incredible alleviation from aches and pains.

1/4 cup coconut oil

7 drops Aroma Siez

7 drops Peppermint

7 drops Valor (or Valor II)

7 drops Panaway

7 drops Lemongrass

  1. In a small bowl, stir or whip the coconut oil until it is soft and creamy.
  2. Using a spoon, mix in all the essential oils.
  3. Store in a small mason jar. (It is always best to use glass with essential oils, not plastic)

Migraine Relief

Studies have been showing that just sniffing green apples can reduce the severity of a migraine.

Ginger contains more than 200 substances in its oils (which is why there are so many uses for ginger). One of those uses is that ginger may block prostiglandins which control inflammation, have an impact some hormones, and stimulate muscle contractions. This is why it is thought that ginger can reduce or stop migraines, by blocking the action of prostiglandins.

I don’t get headaches or migraines very often, but when I do, I head straight for the green apple and ginger. I juice both the apple and ginger together and drink that.

In addition to the juice, I also apply essential oils. I like to help my body do it’s job. Substances found in nature and from plants can help assist the body to do what it knows how to do. So I refer to nature, then step “out of the way” and let nature take its course. It’s also crucial to rest when you have a migraine. Go to a cool, dark, quiet place, after taking this protocol, and let the body deal with the headache and what is causing it.

Juice: 1 green apple and 1 inch ginger root

Apply: 2 drops of Frankincense, 2 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Peppermint on the crown of your head

Apply: 2-3 drops of peppermint on the bottom of both feet

Why those essential oils?

Frankincense – can help body deal with inflammation

Lavender – has a calming effect and also helps body deal with inflammation

Peppermint – helps body deal with pain and inflammation

Essential Oils – 101

There are a lot of essential oil companies out there. It would be easy enough to just go to your local health food market and pick up a bottle of oil and give it a shot. So why should you choose Young Living Essential Oils? What makes them superior to other essential oils on the market? One word….QUALITY.

In America, only a small percentage of an essential oil has to be in the bottle for it can be considered pure.  There are a lot of companies that dilute and/or add in impure chemicals to their bottles of essential oils and still call them “pure”. With Young Living you know you are getting 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oil. Suitable and safe for topical application, internal use, and diffusing.

There are real health benefits from essential oils. They are always my first line of defense when my immune system is out of whack. Sure, maybe a pharmaceutical could mask the symptom of whatever ails you. But there are damaging side effects. Side effects that could, and usually do, impair your internal organs. I don’t know about you, but that scares me! With essential oils, you get side benefits.

So what are essential oils anyway? Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for medicinal and health purposes. They are used for aromatherapy, household cleaning, personal products and more. We get essential oils by distilled parts of the plant, either the root, leaves, flower, bark, resin, or peels. They’re coming right from the plant. All the nutritional and essential benefits from the plant are concentrated right into that wonderful little bottle of oil. So whatever that plant’s health benefits are, you reap the reward from the oil.

Young Living is the ONLY essential oil company to own and operate their own fields. They do their own harvesting and distilling. They do their own packaging. They are involved every single step of the way. This is their Seed to Seal promise.

Let’s face it, no one wants to walk around smelling like a stinky old locker room. We want to smell good. Or at least not smell bad.

The trouble is, there are several damaging chemicals in deodorant that can cause serious chronic diseases in our body. Many of them are known skin irritants, endocrine distruptors, and carcinogens.

Some of those include parabens, aluminum, silica, talc, triclosan, and propylene glycol. These are all linked to organ damage and/or cancer.

We don’t want to clog up our skin’s pores anyway. The skin is a natural detox pathway for our body. We need to keep that pathway open. Let the sweat come, I say! Get those toxins out! I sure don’t want to be putting more IN!

You aren’t doomed to having stinky pits forever, though!

I have for you a super simple recipe to make your own deodorant that not only controls the stink but actually can do some good.

Using apple cider vinegar on your skin is just one of its MANY uses. ACV can balance your skin’s pH. And though it will have a vinegar smell when spritzing it on, I promise once it dries you won’t smell like a salad. I like to add essential oils like lavender because it is great for your skin and tea tree to help assist the body in ridding itself of unwanted bugs.

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar

3-5 drops tea tree essential oil

3-5 drops lavender essential oil

distilled water

  1. In a 4oz. glass spray bottle add the apple cider vinegar, and essential oils. Give it a gentle swirl to combine then fill the rest of the way with distilled water.

DIY Beach Waves Spray

The salty ocean water makes for pretty awesome hair. Unfortunately I do not live by an ocean and even if I did I probably wouldn’t dunk my head in the water every morning as part of my daily morning routine. The good news is, it’s easy enough to get that beach-waves look without even leaving your bathroom!

In an 8 oz. glass spray bottle combine:

1 1/2 tsp epsom salt

5 drops Young Living Lavender essential oil

Fill the rest of the way with distilled water

Adding the lavender oil to the spray will help condition your hair, keep it shiny and reduce flakes. Lavender essential oil is also said to promote healthy hair and hair growth. Plus your hair will smell great!

Here is a super simple mouthwash recipe I make that doesn’t just leave you with a minty fresh taste in your mouth, it actually combats the germs without harsh chemicals or alcohol.

In an 8 oz. glass jar (I re-purposed an old salad dressing jar) add:

1 cup distilled water

4 tsp baking soda

2 drops Young Living Thieves essential oil

5-6 drops Young Living Spearmint essential oil

** You’ll want to give the jar a gentle shake before each use as the baking soda will settle to the bottom when not in use.

Linen Spray/Room Spray

Another great way to use your essential oils is to refresh your linens and your room with a linen/room spray. Depending on what oils you use you can create a different affect. You can also eliminate odors. Below are some ideas for you, but the ideas and combinations are endless! Get creative!

For instance I really like using purification and lemon to get rid of stinky odors in the kitchen.  I love spraying my workout room with “motivation” before I start up my treadmill.

Lavender and peace & calming would be great as a “sleep spray.”

In an 8oz spray bottle put 1.5 ox of witch hazel, your drops of EO (essential oils) and fill the rest of the way with distilled water (distilled water evaporated quicker)

REFRESH: 3 peppermint, 2 eucalyptus, 3 lavender

CITRUS BOMB: 6 bergamot, 3 orange, 2 lime

MOTIVATION: 4 en-r-gee, 6 orange, peppermint

Itch Stick

Summer = bugs. Bugs=bites. Bites=itch.

I love this essential oil roll-on that uses all natural ingredients, works better than any other method I have used to get rid of the itch, and smells great, too!

10 drops Purification

10 drops Lavender

6 drops Peppermint

Grapeseed oil

  1. In a roller bottle put in your drops of oils then fill the rest of the way with grapeseed oil (almond oil or fractionated coconut oil would work fine as well).
