Calming Blend

As I discussed in my post about the vagus nerveit is really crucial we keep our body in balance emotionally. When that falls out of place, and we get overstimulated by our emotions, there is a cascade of affects within our body. Let’s face it, we can’t all be zen-like all the time. We can, however, help our body get back into balance. Some of those ways include meditation, deep breathing and of course essential oils.

Stress Away is a blend of copaiba, lime, cedarwood, vanilla, ocotea and lavendar.

Peace & Calming II is a blend of tangerine, orange, ylang ylang, patchouli, Northern Lights black spruce, vetiver, german chamomille, davana, cassia bergamot, and cinnamon.

I love diffusing this:

Mealtime – our body cannot digest and assimilate nutrients from our food efficiently when we are stressed and agitated.

School/homework – apply this to your kids wrists and neck before sending them to school and diffuse this at the homework work station at home.

Bedtime – to promote a more restful sleep especially after a long, hard, stressful, overstimulating day.

Hand Sanitizer

There has been an overkill of anti-bacterial products available on the market. Sure we want to avoid an overgrowth of the bad bacteria, but we have good bacteria in and on our body. When we use product after product containing anti-bacterial agents we are not only killing off the bad bacteria, we are killing off the good bacteria, too. And we need those good bacteria to lead healthy lives! We have more bacteria in our body than we do cells!! For our body to function properly, we need to make sure we are keeping the good while getting rid of the bad. How do we do that? Oils, of course!

This hand sanitizer is something you’ll want to keep on hand for those moments you can’t get to a sink and wash your hands with soap (regular soap, not anti-bacterial soap) and water. It will kill germs and leave your hands smelling great and feeling smooth. Not sticky like the commercial hand sanitizers do. I always have a bottle of this in my purse.

To make it:

2 oz bottle

8 drops Thieves

3 drops Peppermint

  1. Fill the bottle 2/3 the way with aloe and the essential oils and swirl to combine.
  2. Fill remaining bottle with distilled water. Place cap on and shake well.

Homework Helper

Back to school means back to homework. But before the kids come home with homework they have to sit for hours in the classroom absorbing a lot of information. That is a lot of sitting still and having to focus and concentrate for a young body.

Fortunately there are ways to naturally enhance a body’s ability towards better concentration and focus.

Smell is one of the strongest senses we have. When you smell something it goes directly into the limbic system and into the brain. Unfortunately there are too many toxic odors and that creates a toxic overload which leads to brain dysfunction.

There is a way to “clean” those cell receptors and improve memory and cognition!

I’ll name a few:

Cypress – helps to prevent loss of focus due to external actions – think loud or disruptive classroom or trying to get homework done at home with a younger sibling running around.

Eucalyptus – has an effect on the body’s control system helping you to pay attention longer.

Peppermint – can increase attention span.

Those 3 would be a great combination to diffuse during homework time.

To help a body’s ability to produce glutathione (the antioxidant “cleaner” – to “clean” the toxins from cells), make a roller bottle with the following oils and apply to the feet before sending the kids off to school:

Rosemary

Lavender

Orange

Bergamot

An oil instrumental in balancing emotional and mental health and increasing focus and attention is frankincense. Frankincense is one of my personal favorites.

Vetiver can be applied to the spine to increase calmness in the brain/nervous system.

Young Living also has a Kids Scents blend called Geneyus which contains a few of the above mentioned oils.

Remember, every body is chemically different so what works for one person might not have the same effect on another. Play around with all those oils and find what works best for you and/or your child.

Laundry Detergent

The amount of chemicals in laundry detergents will blow your mind. They get into our body via contact with your skin and through inhalation. These effects range from throat irritation to carcinogenic. You could certainly purchase all-natural detergents but they come at a higher price. Worth it, in my book, because the cost of managing detrimental diseases is far worse.

I have a more economical version of laundry detergent for you, though! It takes 5 minutes to make and only 3 ingredients. Baking soda, borax, and a bar of castile soap. That’s it!

I personally prefer my clothes to smell like nothing. But if you like to add a little scent you could easily add some drops of Young Living Essential Oils. Joy or Citrus Fresh are great ideas!

I do, however, like to add drops of Purification into the load if I have a particularly smelly load, such as sweaty workout clothes or musty towels. If you have a bed-wetter, Purification essential oil is perfect for adding to the load to purify the sheets and blankets.

To make the detergent:

1 2lb box of baking soda

1/2 a 4lb box of borax

1 bar of fragrance free castile soap

  1. Add the baking soda and borax to a large glass jar.
  2. Grate the bar of soap into the baking soda/borax mixture using a cheese grater.
  3. Stir everything and mix well.

Use 1tbsp for normal size loads. Up to 2 tbsp for oversized loads.

** Here is another tip for you…when taking bedding off the beds for washing day, fill a pint sized mason jar with baking soda and add 5 drops of lavender and 5 drops of purification. Put the lid on tight and give it a shake to mix it all up. Sprinkle mixture all over the mattress and let it sit for a few hours, then vacuum it off before remaking the bed. It’s the best way to clean your mattress!

Immune Support Roller

We’ve all been there. The dreaded germ invaders that knock us down for at least a week and leave us feeling like we have been hit by a train.

Of course moms and dads “don’t have time for that,” but it’s sad to watch our kids deal with the knock down of the germs as well.

The essential oil roller I make is my hands down #1 roller blend in reducing the occurrence of sickness and promotes quicker healing when you do get sick.

In the winter months especially (but a good idea to do year round because germs don’t care what season it is!) I make sure I apply a few swipes to the bottoms of my and my family’s feet every morning. When around sick people I will apply more often.

So what’s in it?? Eight of some of the highest germ fighting potential and immune supporting oils Young Living has to offer.

Lemon – promotes production of white blood cells which can increase the body’s ability to fight illness. (In addition to adding lemon to The Immune Support Roller I recommend drinking a mug of warm water with a drop or 2 of lemon in it every morning on an empty stomach)

Lavender – promotes production substances in the body that can fight the bugs that inhibit the immune system from functioning properly

Peppermint – promotes opening of clogged airways

Thieves – (a blend of oils containing: clove, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus, and rosemary) works to purify the body. You can also diffuse Thieves oil to get the oil into your nose and lungs

Tea Tree – works to fight congestion and the resulting discomfort from congestion

Oregano –powerful in fighting against any unwanted and illness producing invaders in our body

Frankincense – can provide relief from symptoms that occur due to common illnesses

Raven – a “cleansing” oil blend that contains ravintsara, peppermint, wintergreen, lemon, and eucalyptus radiata. Raven can help muscles relax with a focus on relaxing the respiratory system.

It is important to note that this roller blend is to be used in support of a healthy lifestyle. The best way to promote wellness is through a proper and healthy diet, exercise, water consumption, and rest.

To make this roller:

10 drops Lemon

10 drops Lavender

10 drops Peppermint

15 drops Thieves

10 drops Tea Tree

10 drops Oregano

15 drops Frankincense

10 drops Raven

Carrier oil of choice

Place all drops of oils into a roller bottle and top off with your carrier oil of choice. I like jojoba oil because it is great for sensitive skin. Fractionated coconut oil is another good one. Young Living has V-6 oil which is another great option.

Diffuser – Nighttime Wellness Blend

When it comes to combating the germs in my house I look no further than my oil cabinet. And even though there are many oils that can be used to strengthen the immune system, my go to is always and will always be Thieves.

Thieves is a blend of oils that are some of the strongest immune supporting oils there are. Clove, lemon, eucalyptus radiata, cinnamon and rosemary make up the Thieves blend.

  • Clove is one of the greatest promoters of overall health of all the essential oils. And there are many oils that can fight for that title! So you know you are getting your lion’s share of immune power with this one!
  • Lemon is great at helping the body purge the unwanted waste and germs that have accumulated. It can also calm a sore and achy throat.
  • Eucalyptus Radiata is an oil great for expelling excess mucus and can open airways.
  • Rosemary can reduce cortisol, thereby reducing stress caused by not feeling well. This stress reduction is a very calming and added benefit for sleep time!
  • Cinnamon can assist in stimulating your immune system to fight off unwanted “bugs.”

Lavender is another oil I like to add to the diffuser at night. It has a very calming effect on your vagus nerve (which is a nerve that runs from your brain down to your abdomen and controls many parts of the body – it is the control center of your parasympathetic nervous system). Anything calming for bed time is a winner in my book. Doesn’t hurt that it smells so good, especially mixed with the oils in Thieves.

Why Every Athlete Should Use Essential Oils

From amateur to professional, essential oils should play a major role in an active lifestyle. From support to performance to recovery, essential oils are essential for promoting optimal conditioning.

We all know that everyone should be active to build their immune system and prevent certain diseases. Professional athletes are generally always on the cutting edge of optimal nutrition and performance enhancers.  But there is no need to look anywhere other than nature.

Essential oils provide immense support to our vigorously worked bodies. They are a powerful and useful tool. Here are a few reasons why everyone should consider the use of essential oils.

  1. Immune Support: When we exercise daily, we get a great immune boost. But training is a whole different animal. Pushing your body to the edge can actually stress your immune system leaving an athlete more susceptible to commonly circulating illnesses. I know when I run a marathon I can tend to feel really run down and even run a low grade fever in the first few hours after competition. To combat this stress, clove, frankincense, thieves and eucalyptus are great immune enhancers.
  1. Performance Boost: Once you have your immune system fully supported you will want to give yourself a boost so you can always perform at your best. The best oil for that is peppermint. Whether it is ingested (only use therapeutic grade safe essential oils like Young Living when ingesting essential oils), diffused or applied, the clearing it provides your body for better oxygen and blood flow translates to a much stronger performance.
  1. Achy muscle soother: So your immune system is in check, you trained real hard and now your muscles are sore and tired. Never fear. There is an oil for that! Lavender is amazingly calming to your achy muscles and your overall body systems. Peppermint has a cooling and refreshing affect and wintergreen is a great deep relaxer on those REAL sore muscles.
  1. Healing: Let’s say aches and pains aren’t a problem but you fell and got scraped up. Enter lavender, myrrh, geranium and tea tree. Lavender is dubbed “the Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils. And for good reason. It is the first oil I go to for all over healing. Myrrh has great wound healing properties. Geranium can help keep infection at bay and tea tree can keep a wound clean and germ free for optimal healing.
  1. Smelly gear: No one wants to smell your stinky workout gear. Washing your clothes and gym bag with Young Living’s Purification essential oil will purify (as the name implies) and get rid of all evidence of foul smelling paraphernalia. Here is another great tip: when you take your shoes off, Drop 2-3 drops of Purification on a cotton ball and place inside your shoe. It will eliminate germy and smelly shoes in no time.

I personally LOVE using the En-R-Gee blend which is a combination of Rosemary, Juniper, Lemongrass, Nutmeg, Balsam Fir, Clove, and Black Pepper. 2 drops on the bottom of each foot before a workout. It gets me energized FOR the workout and keeps me energized LONG AFTER a workout. Game-changer!

Bathroom Scrub

I love that this non-toxic cleaner is extremely quick and easy to make. But even better is that it doesn’t take a lot of elbow grease to get the job done.

There is nothing worse than getting a non-toxic cleaner that takes the strength of 10 men just to get the area clean. That’s enough to cause you to want to give it up and go back to the chemical laden products just to give your arm a break.

We owe it to our health and the health of our families to stop exposing ourselves willingly to the toxic chemicals that cause such harm. Find out just how detrimental they are in this post here.

This cleaner gets the job done without any adverse side effects. Plus it smells good and leaves your hands really soft.

Liquid Castille Soap

Baking soda

White Vinegar

Young Living Lemon Essential Oil

Young Living Thieves Cleaner

Water

To make the cleaner:

  1. In a glass bowl mix equal amounts of castille soap, water, baking soda. (It depends on the size/number of bathrooms you have to clean but to clean 2 bathrooms I typically use 3/4 cup each)
  2. Add a splash of vinegar, 5 drops lemon essential oil, and a capful of Thieves Cleaner.
  3. Optional is to add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice as well. Lemon is great at removing those watermarks from the faucets, leaving them shiny and looking brand new.

“I’m So Happy” Roller

I made this roller because I love the smell of citrus oils.

Citrus oils have been shown to stimulate your immune system which will help fight infection. They are also very invigorating and uplifting. That is why I decided to name this one “I’m So Happy.”

In a roller bottle combine:

15 drops of Stress Away

10 drop of lemon

10 drops of orange

10 drops of grapefruit

10 drops of bergamot

Top off the roller bottle with a carrier oil, such as Young Living’s V-6 oil or you can use fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil. Any will do!

Apply this blend to your wrists, back of neck and behind your ears.

I get compliments every time I wear this. Because of their uplifting “powers” you can uplift the people around you, too!  🙂

I really love putting this combo in my diffuser, as well 2-3 drops of each.
